67% of adults clean their teeth at least twice a day and a further 27% brush once a day, while 39% of Brits use an electric toothbrush. As for the 2% who brush less often… yuk! It’s recommended you brush before bedtime and at least one other time during the day.
Are you wondering how to brush your teeth properly? Brushing our teeth is something most of us have done for as long as we can remember, but often without much thought as to how to do it correctly. Well, it's great that you're giving it some thought now! Keeping your teeth clean is a very important part of maintaining overall good oral hygiene.
With a visit to our hygienist we can tweak your current technique to help improve your brushing skills. But here are a few tips:
Angle the brush at 45 degrees
When brushing the sides of your teeth, tilt your brush 45 degrees so that the bristles can reach inside the small gap between your teeth and gums. If plaque builds up in this pocket, it can lead to gum disease.
Brush gently with small circular motions
Many people brush their teeth using a back-and-forward scrubbing motion, but small circular movements are more effective and less damaging.
You also don't need to exert a lot of pressure, or scrub as hard as you can. Gentle pressure is enough to loosen plaque. Many electric toothbrushes come with a pressure sensor which alerts you if you're brushing your teeth too forcefully.
Brush every surface of every tooth
The order in which you brush your teeth doesn't matter, but doing it the same way every time can help ensure you don't miss any surfaces
Spit but don't rinse
Remember, if you rinse with water or mouthwash straight after brushing your teeth, the ingredients in your toothpaste get diluted or washed away. If you choose to use mouthwash then wait a while after brushing, or use it to freshen up at other times of the day when brushing isn't possible.
Clean between teeth once a day
You don't need to do this every time you brush, but cleaning between your teeth daily will help keep plaque at bay. You can use string floss or interdental brushes.
]]>We send warm wishes and greatest sympathies to King Charles III and to the Royal family. We as a practice would like to extend this message to our patients and staff during this difficult time of reflection and gratitude for the life of Queen Elizabeth II.
We are grateful in advance for your understanding.

How to check at home?
Tilt back your head and open your mouth wide to check the roof of your mouth. Look to see if there are changes in colour or ulcers. Check for changes in texture with your finger.
Make a note of anything unusual. If you have recently had a cold, sore throat, ulcer or swollen glands, bitten or scolded yourself for example, these should heal within 3 weeks. If you have any concerns visit your dentist or doctor to see if you need specialist advice.
]]>Dental Practices are considered essential services and we have all the procedures in place to ensure safe care for all our patients.
We can continue to provide a full range of care including hygienist visits, routine dentistry, dental implants and emergency treatment. Check-up appointments are available too!
If you have an appointment with us, there is no need to cancel.
Patients new and old, please give us a call - if it is routine or urgent, we will do our best to help.

We are still closed except for telephone advice.
However, we are working hard to try and get the practice open for the 8th June following government advice. Obviously the health and well being of our patients and staff is paramount.
We will keep you updated and when we do re-open we will be prioritising those who have had dental problems over the last few weeks and those with open courses of treatment.
We look forward to seeing you all as soon as possible.
Whilst lockdown restrictions continue to ease, the practice remains closed for face to face treatments in line with current professional guidance.
Though eager to return to work, we are looking at ways to do this in a safe way for both you, our staff and the wider population.
Nationwide guidance on a safe return is under development and we will review and act on this as we receive it.
Rest assured we will let you all know when the time is right for us to re-open.
In the meantime, we are still available via email or phone for advice and queries.
We hope you are keeping safe and well.
Thank you.
]]>Ibuprofen and paracetamol taken together at regular intervals work best, if you are able to take them. Otherwise you may need to consult your pharmacist or GP for alternatives.
Dose – 400mgs ibuprofen (doubled up in severe cases), 1 g paracetamol (usually 2 tablets)
Sometimes if the tooth is sensitive to temperature you could try applying desensitizing toothpastes such as Sensodyne.
If this is not helping, sometimes applying a heat or cold to your face next to the source of the pain can help
If things are not settling, you may need a course of antibiotics, and you should make contact with your dental practice to arrange this.
This will be for the foreseeable future, or until advice changes.
The reception team will be on hand from 9am to 12pm weekdays to deal with cancellations and queries
Outside of these hours we request that you leave a message or call back the following day.
You can also email us reception@belgravehousedental.co.uk
In the event of a dental emergency, please call the practice as normal.
One of the clinical team will call you back to determine what we can do to help you.
If we are not available and the emergency is severe – worsening swelling, dental trauma, or uncontrolled bleeding, then please call NHS 111.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to see you for any problems - we have to triage patients in line with current guidance based on the severity of the problem.
We will only be able to offer advice on self-care, such as pain relief. In certain circumstances we maybe able to prescribe antimicrobial medicines.
In a severe emergency you may be directed to A+E, until local urgent dental treatment centres are set by local NHS teams.
We will update you as this happens.
In the meantime, please see our information for managing common dental problems at home.
We want to be able to help you in any way we can, whilst protecting patients and the general public in line with current government advice.
Thank you

Why do we get these ‘Black Triangles’?
It is usually as a result of gum recession. As the gum recedes (often linked to gum disease) it creeps down, away from the tooth, leaving the tooth in the same position but without the gum support. Unfortunately, our gums don’t grow back. The recession of the gum leaves a space/gap between the teeth which is a direct window into the mouth. Just like our houses at night, if there are no lights on, then our windows appear black.
In the case pictured we were able to fill in these ‘windows’ with a white filling material. Just expanding the width of the tooth to replace the loss of gum.
It’s a simple procedure. No drilling or injections are involved and it has a big impact on appearance and confidence.
Another way of treating these areas is with an artificial ‘gum slip’ or gingival veneer. This is for more pronounced gum recession but is equally effective. Again- no injections or drilling are involved.
If you’re interested- make an appointment with your dentist and they can go through your options.
]]>Having undergone treatment using Invisalign, a series of clear plastic aligners, this patient's smile has been transformed.
The patient was unhappy about her overcrowded teeth but Invisalign has corrected this, giving her beautifully rounded arches and now that the teeth have been whitened too, this patient has a smile she can be very proud of!
]]>This patient had started to notice fine wrinkles appearing on her forehead, between her eyebrows and around her eyes. By using a muscle relaxant we were able to smooth those muscles and if she keeps returning for this treatment, this will prevent those wrinkles getting any deeper.
]]>This patient came to see me unhappy with her smile.
For most of her initial consultation with myself, she covered her mouth with her hand.
She wasn’t especially aware she was doing it- it had become an unconscious habit as she was embarrassed by her teeth.
What had happened?
Over the years, this patient had gradually worn down her teeth to about half their normal size. Tooth wear can happen for a number of reasons- grinding/clenching your teeth, acidic diet etc
If left, it can become severe like in this patient’s case.
What did we do?
The patient wanted her smile back so we decided to whiten her teeth initially and then build her teeth back up to a normal height using a tooth coloured filling material.
Her final stage of treatment is to wear a ‘night guard’ which will protect all the work on her mouth. As the name suggests, she wears this guard at night- it’s like a very small clear gumshield over her lower teeth.
All the work we did is reversible and non-destructive.
How long will it last?
It will need repair now and again but as long as the patient wears her night guard and visits both the dentist and hygienist regularly, it should last indefinitely.
The patient no longer hides her smile with her hand!
